Charles Haddon- 1 Year On.

A year ago today Charlie Haddon from Ou Est Le Swimming Pool sadly took his own life after the band played at Pukkelpop.

My best friend and I bonded over our love for certain bands, Ou Est Le Swimming Pool was one of them. We saw them support La Roux in 2009 in Birmingham. Front row. We were the only ones who knew every word to Ou Est’s songs. It was just an awesome night.

Last October I was fortunate enough to go to Chazzstock at Koko in London, a memorial and celebration of Charlie’s’ life. The band only put out one album (The Golden Year) but that one album was truly stunning.

There’s so much one could say about this, but it has been said by so many already, and it still doesn’t seem right. It never will. Just like with Aaliyah and Amy Winehouse. It’s tragic and it’s painful, but we always have the music.

When I bought Cat’s Eyes album I noticed a song was decicated to Charlie, it is truly beautiful.

Support a worth cause.

R.I.P Charlie, you are missed greatly xxx

My Singles Of 2010.

Again, in no order aside from the last track.

Marina And The Diamonds- Shampain- I would have picked Oh No! due to my love for the lyrics. However, I have gone with Shampain as it reminds me of roadtrips to Manchester with my friends and singing a long very loudly, providing amusement for other drivers. Then again..Oh No! reminds me of dancing to it and reciting some of Marina’s moves in the video.

Zola Jesus-NightSo bloody eerie and mind blowing. The album is stunning. This song is just fucking out of this world. The intro just..I don’t know, the song leaves you paralysed- unable to move- in awe of what you’ve just heard.

New Young Pony Club- Lost A Girl- Sounds very 80s- but they do it in a good, credible way. It isn’t ripping anyone off nor are they copying any other 80s band.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool- The Key- This band are mine and my best friend’s band. When we heard about Charlie we were inconsolable for ages. We went to Chazzstock in London and it was so moving. So sad. OELSP will always be one of my favourite bands, and luckily I saw them live. I have no idea what they’ll do now..it’s just a shame.

The Vaccines- Wreckin’ Bar (Ra Ra Ra)- They also played at Chazzstock and were joined by Faris and Tom from The Horrors. Yes, I had a massive fit of excitement during that. This song is the shortest song performed on Jools Holland- FACT! It is also one of the best songs of this year. I hope they’re massive in 2011.

CocknBullKid- Hold Onto Your Misery- Everyone knows how much I adore Anita Blay. She’s amazing. Her album is FINALLY out in February. I’m aware it’ll be one of my favourites of 2011.

Florence & The Machine- Cosmic Love- I know Lungs came out last year, but this single was released this year..so I can list it :p My love for Flo is massive and..yeah, you know. She’s THE ONE isn’t she. This is my favourite Flo song. Live is just tears me apart. I cannot describe it.

Ellie Goulding- Guns And Horses- I loved the demo of this, and I’m sure the video cured me of my phobia of horses slightly. I say it’s a phobia- I just really dislike horses. I could’ve listed Starry Eyed but I only like it when it’s done live. Under The Sheets was last year so…I’m going with Guns And Horses. She looks beautiful (as ever) in the video.

Warpaint- Undertow- This song lyrically blew my mind. Did you see them do this acoustic on BBC3 during Reading/Leeds Festival? That was something. Stella drumming on a box. How many would do that, and do iut well? This band were the best band of 2010. I love Jenny’s bass playing on this, it’s so relaxed. Theresa kills the guitar and Emily’s vocals are stunning. Stella is the best drummer around. Easily. And Undertow shows exactly why.

SONG OF THE YEAR.

Foals- Spanish Sahara- The build up in this song is beautiful. Yannis’ voice on this song is gorgeous. The lyrics are stunning. It lasts just over 6 minutes, perfect to play on repeat when on a long train journey.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool-The Golden Year.

Listening to this album has made me cry from start to finish. Listening to this album is heartbreaking. Every word that Charlie sings means more than it would if he was still here. On Monday (4th) I went to Chazzstock, and the album was sung by different bands. A moving, beautiful yet sad affair. It shouldn’t have happened, he should still be here. Attempting to review this album is one of the most difficultest (is that even a word?) things I have ever written.

Every song is brilliant, I am not just saying that because of what happened. I’m saying it because it is true. As far as debuts go, OELSP have out down themselves here. There is honestly no album filler at all on this album. The lyrics are quite dark, but the music isn’t. OELSP are a band that you just instantly love. It is a remarkable debut album, that us fans from the begining will find difficult to listen to. Every so often it will hit you what happened, and you cannot help but cry.

Opener,  You Started is gorgeous. Charlie’s voice on this track, Better and Outside is just beautiful. Part of me wants to do some in depth review, but I just cannot do it. I cannot tell you how amazing this album. I can only tell you to go out and buy it on Monday 11th October. Buy it for the sake of good music. Buy it because Ou Est Le Swimming Pool are a brilliant band.

I cannot write anymore, my words will not do this album any justice.

For Charles.

I honestly haven’t stopped crying on and off since hearing about Charlie last night. Some may think it’s odd, others may understand.

My best friend and I have massive love for Ou Est Le Swimming Pool. When we found out, in November, that they were La Roux’s support we got more excited about seeing them than La Roux. We were at the front singing along to every word- and they noticed.

Dance The Way I Feel was one of the few songs that helped me out a lot last year. It was the song I’d play and forget pretty much everything. Every house party had it blasting out. Me and my best friend would just sing and make some insane dance move to it. Now…I find it a bit hard to listen to.

Jackson’s Last Stand is just a beaut. Charlie’s voice is so so unique. OELP are a unique band. I have no idea what will happen with the band…if the album will come out or if the UK October tour is still going ahead. Regardless of what will happen now- They made their mark, and this is such a shame. I’m not one for believing in heartbreak- but I think mine’s a little broken.

Charlie, may you Rest In Peace love. Thoughts and love go out to the band, his family and friends.

R.I.P. Charlie Haddon.

Sadly Charlie Haddon from Ou Est Le Swimming Pool has killed himself after his band performed at Belgian Festival, Pukkelpop today.

OELP are such an exciting, wonderful band…and it’s a shame that Charlie won’t see their debut album be released. I saw them support La Roux last year, and they were just awesome. So energetic and passionate. Just lovely guys. My thoughts and love go out to the band and Charlie’s family.

Dear 2010…..

Dear 2010, I’d like for the following talented folks to become rather big and get some damn credit this year :

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool : Dance The Way I Feel.  They are bloody good live I must say!

Marina And The Diamonds : Hollywood.  (She has a song called Porn Is Good For The Soul which is highly amusing!)

Ellie Goulding : Guns And Horses.  Frankmusik produced some tracks, obviously she’s amazing!

thecocknbullkid: I’m Not Sorry. I know I made a post about her the other day but seriously, I love her and she’s pretty friggin’ good.

Karima Francis : Again.  She should’ve been massive in 2009 but alas..didn’t happen. This year maybe?!

That’ll be all for now.

Songs Of 2009.

Okay so I’ve done albums of the year, now I’m going to attempt doing the songs of the year. I’ll edit this at least 10 times before being content with my choices. No order, until the last 3…as usual!

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool-Dance The Way I Feel. I firmly believe that this song can make the most miserable person feel happy listening to this. They are a friggin’ brilliant live band and I hope next year sees them becoming massive.

Frankmusik-Better Off As Two. Best friend got me into Frankmusik. I love this song.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs-Zero. The video alone was good. I want Karen O’s jacket from this video. I think a sense of power or something would come from wearing it.

Ellie Goulding-Under The Sheets. She’ll be big next year, by rights.

Marina & The Diamonds-I Am Not A Robot. The lyrics tug at your heartstrongs and make you think it’s all going to be okay because let’s face it, it always is 🙂

La Roux-I’m Not Your Toy. I could’ve gone for Bulletproof, but I didn’t. I prefer this song to what’s been released so far. BUT, Quicksand will ALWAYS be a personal favourite.

Norah Jones-Chasing Pirates. I’m pretty much in love with her new album.

Lightspeed Champion-Marlene. I know this out next year but the video is already out so….fuck it! Besides, his new album will probably be one of the best albums out next year.

Girls-Lust For Life. I was very happy that this wasn’t an Iggy Pop cover. Nobody should cover Iggy Pop. EVER.

Camera Obscura-French Navy. Goosebumps everywhere when I first heard this. Still happens now.

Golden Silvers-True Romance.  A band that I’m so glad I saw live. This song has some good memories tied to it. The main one being seeing them support Florence, and Florence touching my shoulder saying “excuse me” to get past and dancing in front of me and my best mate to this.

The Saturdays-Forever Is Over. This has “FUCK YOU” written all over it, which is probably why I love it.

Lady GaGa-Bad Romance- RA RA AH AH…You know how it goes. I love this an unhealthy amount (some would say..I disagree) The reference to Hitchcock’s films and the video just make it even more amazing than it already is.

Jay-Z & Alicia Keys-Empire State Of Mind. Two of my favourite artists on the same record. Musical heaven. Reasonable Doubt will always be my favourite Jay album but this reminds me why I love him.

The Dead Weather-Treat Me Like Your Mother. The video is amazing and I love Alison. No more needs to be said really.

Julian Casablancas-11th Dimension. This was enough to make me forget that The Strokes haven’t put an album out since 2005.

Florence + The Machine- You’ve Got The Love. Seeing a few thousand people around you sing along to every word is probably the best thing I’ve seen this year. My favourite cover EVER.

Metric-Help I’m Alive. I hate the word epic but that’s the only word to use to describe this song.

The Raveonettes-Last Dance. Sweet, cute, perfect.

Spinnerette-Baptized By Fire. The lyrics alone are pretty friggin’ cool. I love Brody, who doesn’t?!

Bat For Lashes-Daniel. Natasha Khan possess one of the best voices in the world right now.

Bloc Party-One More Chance. Sounds like a 90s dance track and it’s Bloc Party. Perfect.

thecocknbullkid-I’m Not Sorry. This may have come out last year? But whatever, I still love it. Album next year. ‘BOUT TIME!

The Horrors-Sea Within A Sea. 7 minutes of musical genius. I remember waiting for the countdown to end on thier website and seeing this.

Doll & The Kicks-You Turn Up. Love this band to pieces and I think they need to be signed. NOW. Lovely people and amazing live.

The Chapman Family- Virgins. Kingsley Chapman is lovely. The Chapman Family also need to be signed ASAP.

White Lies-To Lose My Life. So dark and haunting.

TOP 5!!!

Fever Ray-If I Had A Heart. Strange and beautiful.

Morrissey- I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris. Anything Moz does is genius, but this is easily my favourite single of his in a long time. The lyrics speak to me and probably most of Moz’s fans. It just reinforces our unconditional love for him.

The xx- Crystalised. Favourite new band of the year. Awesome live. The album is brilliant from start to finish.

Florence + The Machine- Dog Days Are Over. Pretty much the same as what I said about You’ve Got The Love. I love the video to this. Makes me want to run through a forest in a tux. I won’t though.

Florence + The Machine-Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up). I remember where I was when I first heard this and I remember crying because..it just like, hit me in the gut. Right in the gut and I got this feeling of “shit…everything is pretty fucked up right now but I’m going to be fine.” Lo and behold I am! Morbid story aside, this song is just brilliant. The live version of this with Isabella doing the 90s balaric keyboard solo makes me weak and fucking happy. You need to physically see it to understand. I don’t need to go into detail about the importance of this song to me. If I was writing about album tracks too, I’d put Blinding, Howl and Cosmic Love in the list.

La Roux. Birmingham O2 Academy. 18th November 2009.

You know you’re going to have a good night when you are wandering a cold city holding a map to find the venue. The venue used to be easy to find, that was until they decided to move it. I, and others fail to see why they moved the Academy in Birmingham. It was fine just where it was, but that’s a different story.

The last time I saw La Roux was at The Sugarmill in Stoke. Quite a small venue compared to the O2 Academy.

Sat on the floor outside the Academy with our hats to keep us warm and Bacardi and Sprite for entertainment, it didn’t matter how cold we got. That was until we heard La Roux sound check. Anyone who knows me knows that I cannot listen to Cover My Eyes. It is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard and is the only track off the album I can’t listen to. My best friend, who was with me, feels exactly the same. So imagine how we felt when we were heard it being played in the sound check. Insert a few expletives and us banging on the door we had our backs to, telling La Roux to stop.

Support came from Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, who are ridiculously handsome and energetic. With a half hour set, they easily won the crowd over- especially with set closer, Dance The Way I Feel. Which I think my best friend had some kind of seizure during. She also blew kisses with one of the singers. Ou Est Le Swimming Pool are one of my favourite support acts I’ve seen, but it won’t be long before they are the headline act.

Finally it was time for La Roux to come on. The lights dimmed and the intro to Tigerlily blasted out with the words La Roux flashing from the stage.

The band and Elly came onto the stage greeted by what can only be described as a loving noise. I’m not entirely sure; I think the Bacardi was kicking in at this point.

The one thing that pisses me off about the press is how they portray Elly to be some kind of bitch who is always angry. Go to one of her gigs and you’ll see that she adores her fans a hell of a lot, and the way she interacts with them is by no means bitchy.

Most of the album is played including Saviour, a bonus track.

Halfway through she removes her jacket, saying she was too hot. She was greeted by various loving remarks and whistles. She replied with “Oh fuck off!” Claps all round.

The end of Quicksand was changed to “I’m in Birmingham” which was pretty cool. I’ll get this bit over with because it was quite painful. They played Cover My Eyes. My best friend and I looked at each other, and we hugged throughout the whole song. I only cried a little bit. I think I was just in awe of how amazing Elly’s voice was, so I ignored how heartbreaking the song is.

At one point she gave me a smile, I think part of me died a little. She took notice of us at the front row and called us the “frantic wavers” and as she waved, my best friend leaned over the barrier. I thought she had dropped her bag; this was greeted by an “Oh hello!” from Elly. Turns out my best friend flashed her boobies at her. This story has been told to everyone and is up there with meeting Florence.

See, waiting for hours to get to the front always pays off.

The set ended with Bulletproof which of course everybody went mental over. If you’ve not seen La Roux live yet, do yourself a favour and go do it. And whilst you’re at it, go see when Ou Est Le Swimming Pool are playing near you and go see them too!
