TABLE SCRAPS. The Castle, Manchester. 04/10/2018

0008800818_10

Whilst living in London, I missed many chances to see a band I quite frankly adore, and am obsessed with. My missed chances came down to clashes with other plans, public transport being a shithead and my own misgivings- panic attacks. The thought of potentially going out on my own would more often than not cause me to feel like I was, to put it heavily but honestly- dying. I still get that feeling. This week I’ve noticed it happening, but I’m not beating myself up over it. I left a city that was pretty much killing me in all ways possible, and now I’m finally settled in a place I should have been in many years ago. Why is this relevant? It probably isn’t. I’ve been up since 5am. I’ve done my washing, ironed (I know!!) some clothes and to my disgust, drank coffee because I wanted to see if it would help me stay awake. I’m now at work. I start at 8, I’ve got 15 minutes to tell you about why last night’s show was brilliant. Please note: the coffee hasn’t helped at all and I really want to take a nap.

Table Scraps are quite frankly one of the best bands you will ever see. I’m not exaggerating with this one. You want riffs that melt your face? Got it. You want vocals that beautifully burst your eardrums? Got it. You want the bass to sail through you and make you move in ways you didn’t know you could? Best believe you’ve got it. Oh, and you want the drums to sound like some higher being is in the room? Got it, and then some. Table Scraps are three musicians who, in my eyes (and ears) are HUGELY underrated. On record, it is obvious how amazing they are. But when you see them live, it’s totally different. The Castle is a tiny venue. It’s a pub with a small back room, which is basically a sauna. Last night was a sweatfest, and I don’t think it could have been better any other way. Scott is EASILY one of the best guitarists around. In fact, he’s most certainly up there with being one of the best I’ve ever seen. He makes his guitar sound like a machine gun being wielded by a maniac. This is purely down to the way he thrashes his guitar about and gives you this face-melting solos when you least expect it.

Let’s talk about Poppy and her being probably the best drummer you’ll see. There’s a couple of drummers I love hearing, and seeing them play live. I’ve got my list on my mind, and I’ve pushed Poppy to the top because I honestly don’t think I’ll ever witness anything or anyone as great as her again. I know fuck all about playing music, I just love music as a fan and write as one. I don’t know what the technical terms are or whatever, but let’s just go with Poppy being the best drummer around- and most definitely in this country. Again, she treats her drums as a weapon. Every beat is felt in your chest, and you move to the perfect timings. Then we move on to Tim. The tallest bass player I ever did meet. The bassist is the backbone of a band, but with Table Scraps that doesn’t occur. They are all the backbone of the band. I love the way Tim guides and glides us through the songs. He isn’t as manic as Scott is, but don’t let his cool, calm stance fool you. He’s got this subtle way of making you pay close attention to what he is doing. And what is he doing? Making you witness that the bass can be equally as aggressive as the drums and guitar.

Table Scraps annihilate the stage at The Castle, and blow our minds. My personal favourite was I’m A Failure. It’s my favourite song by them, and I was super happy to see it live. This is only the second time they have played Manchester and I sincerely hope it isn’t the last. Just give them a residency at The Castle or Soup Kitchen. But to be honest, they are a band that could easily play a huge arena and win people over. There is something about them, and I rarely say this because I love small venues, but there is something about Table Scraps that makes you want to see them play a huge stadium. Their sound is massive, and it is meant to be heard by us all. I honestly don’t see why they couldn’t sell out a huge venue, and just rip us all to shreds with their brutal sound. I hope one day they get there, because they truly deserve it.

The set ends with the excellent, Motorcycle (Straight To Hell) which sees Scott launch himself into the crowd for a few seconds, and the end of this song is greeted with Scott, Poppy and Tim just going absolutely nuts on stage. It was the perfect ending to one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

If you ever get the chance to see them, GO. You’ll probably be a bit deaf the morning after but it’s worth it. They are truly one of the most talented, coolest, greatest and best bands around.

Oh, and one last thing- they’ve got a tape out on Burger Records. Do you know how big a deal that is?! HUGE.

BORING GIRLS.

a3161542785_10

Just so we are clear, France is home to some of the greatest bands and musicians of all time. However, the newer bands are something else. A lot of them have this insane energy and wild sound that makes them tower above anything else you’ve been into. I’m about to go on and on about a band I adore; you might just want to skip to the parts where you can listen to them instead.

Boring Girls are 4 musicians who will just straight up blow your mind. They have this effortlessly cool sound that makes you instantly think you are wandering round the city streets, soaking up all it has to offer. Then before you know it, you’re stumbling out of a bar with a carafe of wine trying to find your way home.

They have such great harmonies and sound like a band who have been together way longer than a year. They’ve got a 60s Girl Group sound going on, but at the same time a really strong Garage Rock feel that you can’t get enough of. The vocals are wonderfully distorted in all the right places. Their EP came out last week, and although it’s just four songs- it is four songs that show you just how brilliant they are.

The EP is titled P.L.N (Perverse Lustful Narcissistic) and it is full of songs that devour these emotions/feelings. There is something hugely wonderful about Boring Girls that just makes you want to leave your daily responsibilities behind, and go to all their shows and beg them to let you join the band. I mean, the latter won’t happen but they sincerely do make you want to see their live shows constantly. With just four songs they do this, and these four songs will stay on your mind for a while.

Sometimes you just know in your gut when you’ve heard something really remarkable, and Boring Girls hit you with this feeling. They hit you pretty hard with this feeling. I’m on my second listen of the EP now, and I can’t get enough of it. They have a sound quite similar to PINS first record, Girls Like Us but as you delve deeper into their sound- you know that nothing can really come close to them. They are just such an exciting band that you cannot get enough of. I’m excited for anyone else who may discover them, and listen to them for the first time because it is such an amazing feeling. I’m always looking for music that sounds like this, or gives me a feeling just like this. Will I find another who do the same to me? Who knows, but right now I’m all about Boring Girls and their effortlessly cool sound.

Will they make it over to the UK? Who knows. But if they do, I’m certain we’ll have a list of venues fighting it out to have them play. You just know instantly from listening to them that their live shows are probably out of this world. They have this tight sound, and it is raw in all the essential places. It is a truly wonderful EP, and if it is their debut (which I think it is) then they’re going to destroy us all with whatever they do next.

Boring Girls are quite simply one of the most exciting bands we are going to hear. They are anything but boring. They are everything I want from a band, and more. I’m super excited to hear more and more from them. Four songs isn’t enough, but for now it’s enough to rouse up my attention and whatever else I’ve got. The songs are just such a pleasure to listen to, and to really indulge in.

If you live in France, go see them. Make them the biggest band in your country.!

THE DEVILS.

0009528916_10

If you’re looking for a real Garage Rock/Trashy band, then look no further than heroes of Naples- The Devils. A duo who have been sent from the fiery pits of Hell to lure you in with them, and to convert you at their church of Rock ‘n’ Roll. If at first listen you are afraid, then stick with it.

Buckle up.

The Devils are a proper exciting band; Gianni absolutely destroys the guitar, and Erica is sent to brutalise you with her screams and drumming. They both rip right through you with their smutty sound that would have Lux Interior smirking. These songs aren’t meant to be heavenly, but they sure sound it. The way they just make you feel several shades of wrong for getting into these blistering songs that are evidently about the things no one else dares touch on. Just look at the song titles, and you’ll understand. The songs are loud and sound like the end of the world approaching. Maybe The Devils are a cult- where do we sign up?

The songs ooze all the things that you’d probably shy away from, but the way in which they grip you with their sound is nothing short of inevitable. With even just a few seconds in, you know that they are going to be a band that you cannot shake off. Don’t Tell Jesus is a massively eerie song that makes you feel as if you’ve done something you maybe shouldn’t have. They bring out the side of you that others may want to suppress. Unleash it.

They released the funny but weirdly cool titled record, Iron Butt at the start of the year. I guess you’ve got to be kind of a hard ass to stomach these songs. We have some exceptionally romantic songs on this record such as Guts is Enough and Put Your Devil into my Ass. Some will turn their noses up at these songs, mainly for their titles but they are missing the point. Put all that aside, and you’ll easily hear that you’re listening to a really, really exciting band who will just ruin you completely with their glorious sound.

The feedback in the songs, the screaming, the sheer loudness is what kept me going back for more from them. I’m obsessed with how much noise two people can create, and how they just make it sound like a constant Horror film. One of those low-budget Horror films that has brilliant music kicking in when something terrible is about to happen. You can’t help but think something is going to go off when you listen to The Devils. You don’t feel safe listening to them, and for me that is most certainly part of the charm and attraction.

Sin, You Sinners was their first record but by no means treat this as a record that makes you feel the band are being cautious. This is a band who right from the start knew what they wanted to do, how they wanted to do it and who they were coming for. Their songs are consistently great, and the sheer speed they play at is amazing. You can’t help but invest a lot of time into them, they just have a sound that you feel you have been searching for, for so long. Now you have it, can anything else compare?

Gianni singing and Erica’s screaming are a perfect match, and you can’t believe that they have only been making music as The Devils since 2015. They sound like the spawn of The Cramps, but at the same time- unlike anything else you’ve ever heard.

Of course I am slightly biased with my love for the band as they are Italian, but to be honest- I’d still be obsessed with them regardless of where they are from. When you listen to them, you can’t help but let your mind go off and make you imagine you are at their live shows. Their live shows are probably completely wild, and I sincerely hope they come over to the UK soon and unleash their Hell upon us all with their brutal sound.

Play loud, of course.

PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS PIGS: King Of Cowards.

0013804653_10

With just six songs, the new record by Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs just instantly blows your mind, bursts your eardrum and fills you with this eternal rapture. The record opens with GNT which is probably the best opener to any record I’ve heard in a long time. The record is menacing. The record feels like something you’d play to conjure up something from the underworld. It’s an incredible record. It’s just absolutely mind-bending, life-changing and really really loud.

Before I really get into this record, I just hope our next generation, and the generation after that get into bands like Pigs and keep this sound alive. The musicianship is out of this world. To create something this loud, this off the wall and important takes guts, and Pigs sure as hell have them. The songs are proper anthemic which are created to just rip you apart, and totally devour your soul. You don’t mind the band taking every piece of you, because the music is that powerful. The passion in Matt’s voice is insane. He sounds like a preacher with a cult following- we will all listen and cling to his words. The sheer heaviness of this band and the way they sound together reminds me of two of my all-time favourite bands- Sleep and Melvins. They make me feel exactly the same way I did when I first heard these bands a long time ago. They just fill you with excitement because FINALLY we have a band making heavy music that has some bite to it.

There’s only five of them in the band, but on this record they make you feel like you’re listening to a Stoner Rock orchestra. It’s nothing but genius. That’s the only word to describe them. Some may have labelled last year’s release, Feed The Rats as being quite difficult to listen to- but I don’t get it. Three songs that last ages, and with every listen they just make your brain go off into the unknown. Have they done the same with King Of Cowards? Come on now, you KNOW they have.

Right now I’m calling A66 as my favourite. I love how it just feels like your whole being is turning to mush, and as you melt into the ground- the band take what is left of you and create something no other band has ever dared to do. They push themselves, they push the listener and I love that so much. They’ll make you feel uncomfortable with first listen- especially this song. At times it’ll feel like white noise echoing in your ears and shattering your skull, but before the song is done- you’ll be hooked. There is no band like this right now, and thank fuck we have them. They’re playing Manchester soon, but I’m a twat and I didn’t get a ticket. Guess I’ll have to wait until April for the next one!

This record aside, you just know that Pigs are a band that HAVE to be seen live. When A66 goes right into Thumbsucker, you just know that their live shows would leave you hard of hearing for weeks. It doesn’t matter anyway, because nothing will sound as glorious as them. I love tranquil bands like Warpaint and Beach House so much, but there’s part of my brain that craves bands like Pigs to just unleash everything that gets held back. I love nothing more than listening to them stupidly loud, and getting completely lost in how phenomenal they are. I know they aren’t for everyone, but anyone can hear just how brilliant they are. The have this huge sound that stays ringing in your brain for hours after you’ve listened to them.

Some music is just destined to be played loud. There’s no other way to listen to King Of Cowards other than brutally loud. I’ve always had such love and respect for them, and what they’ve done with this record has totally blown me away. I’m in awe of how great they are- I always knew they were, but they’ve truly done something else with this record. You’ll never know what you’re going to get with them, and that’s one of the many reasons as to why I’m obsessed with them.

Buy the record, go to the shows and don’t wear earplugs when you go see them. Absorb in all the noise, the sweat, the limb flailing and just get right into it.

SLOKS.

0012726808_10

Torino is home to one of my biggest loves- Juventus. Much to my stepdad’s dislike (he supports Torino) Juve are my team. But Torino is home to a band that are just insanely brilliant and most definitely sound like they have escaped somewhere secure and broke out.

SLOKS sound like everything you want your new favourite band to sound like. They are like The Cramps but with more spook and weirdness in their sound. They are totally over the top and I love that so much about them. Their songs are just wild and loud. They don’t sound like anything else I’ve ever heard, but the reference to The Cramps is as close as you’ll get.

Lead singer/screamer Ivy Claudy has such powerful vocals. Her screams go right through you like an electric shock on wet skin. It makes you feel like you are out of control of everything around you, they send you into their twisted world that feels and sounds like nothing else you’ve put yourself through before. Her screams on the song, Use Me sound like someone possessed. It’s part eerie but part bloody amazing.

SLOKS are afraid to push themselves and have this off the wall sound. They totally destroy your soul with their music, and you love them for it. You want them to take every ounce of you and be part of their gang. Their songs are like fires that keep being prodded to get bigger and bigger. The music is brutal and the sheer fuzziness of it rips right through you. They are such a great band to listen to, and there’s just so much to love about them. I don’t know if I can really put across how great they are.

The vocals are distorted, but my god the screams are electrifying. Play them loud enough, and your neighbours will end up calling the police. Maybe be careful with that one. The songs are made to be played loud. Either in the comfort of your own home, or in some dodgy bar where you have no idea if you’ll leave with or without a few bruises. You can’t help but be fixated on how their live shows must be when you listen to them. You can feel the drums really go through you, the vocals are something else and the guitar just sounds like a machine gun going insane.

At the heart of it, SLOKS are a fantastic Garage Rock band but they offer you so much more. Every single song is like a punch in the gut. Your body takes frequent beatings as you listen to their songs. Today they released their new record, Holy Motor which is just a body of out of control HITS. Every song is a hit. No song feels like it is there just to take up space. These are songs you’ll obsess over, and nothing will cure you from this. It’s the fuzzy vocals. They really grip you.

Would you play this band to your parents? Well, if they’re as cool as my mum and stepdad, you would! The songs on every release I’ve been listening to just show you how this band are entirely unapologetic in what they do. They aren’t doing it for anyone else but themselves, and those who feed off this kind of music. So sure, we can call it Garage Rock or whatever- but let’s be honest, it’s just genius.

SLOKS aren’t a band that are going away any time soon. In fact, they are probably going to get louder and louder. It’s worth sacrificing your hearing for.

This is why being Italian is so cool- bands like this!

Holy Motor is out today via Voodoo Rhythm Records.

DRUNK MUMS: Denim & Leather Together Forever.

a3383501186_10

After spending too long trying to find something to write about- I’ve settled on the new Drunk Mums record, which has again been released on the great Pissfart Records. If you’re looking for something real rowdy to play disgustingly loud to piss your neighbours off with, then this is your record. Or, maybe you’ll play it loud enough to make them a fan.

The record came out about 2 weeks or so ago, and I’m stupid for not writing about it sooner. It’s one of the rawest Punk records you’ll hear this year, and with this slowly coming to a close- it’s safe to say it might just well be the loudest.

Drunk Mums have made a record that just makes you want to trash the place. The songs are short and like someone has smacked you round the face a few times. The songs will leave you feeling battered and bruised, and we need these kinds of bands. We need bands to kick some life into us, and fortunately Pissfart Records is one of those labels that constantly put out records that do this.

One side is made for you put your best denim on, the other is for your leather. If it smells a bit and is ripped a bit- then put it on, and play this record loud. I love how they remind me of Dead Boys. Ode To Death is one of the greatest modern-day Punk songs. It’s got a feel of the Sex Pistols slightly, but the vocals are gritty and remind me so much of Stiv from Dead Boys. It’s my favourite song on the record. I love how it has a real Punk sound to it, and puts everything else you’ve ever heard to shame. It’s got the brutal smutty sound that is on I Wanna Be Your Dog by The Stooges. Just play this loud. And on repeat.

The songs rip right through you and feel, and sound like nothing else. The Leather side of this record is a little heavier with a bit more aggression in the vocals. This record absolutely shows us what Drunk Mums are made of, and Pissfart Records are kings for putting out consistently great records. Denim & Leather Together Forever is such a fantastic record, and I know it’s only been out a few weeks, but it really needs to be heard by any and everyone. Especially those who are into this kind of noise.

For those days where you just want to blast out something really loud and obnoxious, Drunk Mums have got you covered. They aren’t going to take you by the hand on this one, oh no. They are going to grab you by the scruff of your neck and lob you right into the pit of the glorious world they have created with this record. It’s honestly one of the best records I’ve heard in a long time with this sound. It just gives you this feeling that you know, whatever anyone says- Punk will never ever die. It can’t, it won’t- especially because of Drunk Mums. Are they our saviours? Probably.

When I wrote about them at the start of the year, I had no idea what they would hit us with. Turns out they’ve got the best named song of the year, ‘I’ve Got A Motorbike So Fuck You.’ Not only is a great title, it’s a brilliant song. Just use it as a comeback for anyone who’s pissing you off. Who cares if you’ve got a bus pass and not a bike; no one needs to know.

Denim & Leather Together Forever is an exceptional record- trust me on this one. They need to bring their live shows over here. Something tells me that this record live would just be totally wild. The record ends of Viper, which has this heavy feel that makes you fall in love with the band all over again- making you start the record all over again.

In short, Drunk Mums have made the best Punk record of the year and Pissfart Records are just phenomenal at what they do.

Buy the record, sing a long, get your denim and leather out- and play this record LOUD.

COEVAL.

a3496436705_10

You know that feeling you get when you hear a band for the very first time, and you just know that you’re going to be a fan for as long as they make music and not even them splitting up could taint your love for them? That’s EXACTLY how COEVAL have me feeling.

They’re pretty much a brand new band, and the three of them are just exceptional and make bloody amazing music. The songs are dark. Really dark, and really heavy. They aren’t for those who like pointless mushy love songs. They are for those who want something hard-hitting, poetic and haunting.

This dark and eerie sound is something I can’t get enough of- the songs are euphoric and feel like you’ve stepped into a twisted film where you don’t know who to trust, or if you won’t see tomorrow or not. The sinister feel comes through wonderfully on Bene’s vocals. He has such a distinctive voice, and honestly- you cannot compare COEVAL to anything or anyone else. His vocals on Ex-Future will fry your brain and most certainly have you hooked for life.

For a band that are so new, this EP is so perfect and so beautifully put together. They sound like a band who have been doing this for decades. It definitely goes beyond what is expected from a band when they first put their music out into the world. The guitars sound like chain saws on New Light, and pretty much all the songs. They sound like weapons being aimed to take your soul and take over every single part of you. The drums will throb beautifully in your ears, and all you can do is turn the songs louder to reach this state of nirvana that COEVAL bring out. The songs may be dark and whatnot, but my god they are excellent.

I love the unconventional romanticism in the songs. Pure, just like a Nick Cave love song. I love the real rowdiness in the songs and how none of the band members dominate the other with just how talented they are. I am so in awe of this band. They are definitely up there with being one of the most exciting bands I’ve heard this year. They don’t sound like a band from London. They sound like a band who have roamed the Parisian streets at 3am looking for the meaning of life. They have this gorgeous sound that I reckon most will just lump as ‘Goth’ and be unaware of everything that is going on. They aren’t a band that caters to music genres. They are a band that will beautifully rip you apart with their poetic and captivating sound.

The EP has been released on the ever influential and always brilliant, Le Turc Mécanique who are constantly putting out exceptional Punk records, and beyond. It is definitely worth delving into their releases, and if you do- you’ll see exactly why COEVAL made them their home for this record.

Within 15 minutes, COEVAL have established themselves as being one of the best new bands around. If they can leave their mark like this with just four songs, imagine what they can do with more and more records. I’m super excited to see what they give us next and I hope they find their way up here in Manchester soon. Us Northerners would be honoured to have them.

Let the songs ricochet right through you, and fully embrace every feeling that COEVAL give you. Play loud, as always.

SEXTILE: 3.

a0633383257_10

I’m fully aware that Sextile have been a constant feature here recently, but they are THAT good and deserve all the attention possible. Besides, I’m still wanting to go back to Saturday night so I can re-live their show all over again.

3 is their new EP which came out on Friday. It’s made up of five songs to lose your mind to. The songs are dark, synth-filled and all kinds of creepy. Brady’s vocals on this one is pretty incredible. He’s someone with such a powerful voice that makes you just hang on to every word that comes out of his mouth. The way he uses his voice reminds of Wes Eisold. It takes a lot for me to say that because I pretty much idolise Cold Cave/Wes, but there is something about Sextile that makes me feel like I did when I first heard Cold Cave 9 years ago.

The EP opens up with the stunning, Disco and it then rips right into Drop You which is probably my favourite. Well, it’s my favourite today. I’ll probably change my mind in a few hours or so, but I just love this raw Industrial feel. It feels like night-time on the mean streets of Berlin in the 70s or lurking in basement bars in New York. It’s got a real sordid feel to it, and I love that about Sextile. I love music that has this unconventional darkness and some what smuttiness to it. Sextile are such an exciting band, and the best of them truly comes out on Drop You. It’s a song that holds so much within it, and seeing it live just blew my mind.

Paradox is a hypnotic song with early Depeche Mode flowing throughout it. It’s not a gentle song by no means. Their songs aren’t gentle- they are brutal and hold a wealth of fight within them. It’s the kind of song you play as you approach a fist fight or a scrap in a bar. It’s got rage, it’s got power and it’s such an exciting song to listen to. It’s the type of song that just sparks up wild images for your take on what the video should be like to this song if you were to re-create it. There is most certainly something about Sextile that just HAS to be heard and they are a band that stick with you. You’ll remember the first time you heard them, the first time you saw one of their shows- the vital moments stick with you.

Spun is a brilliant song. The guitar on this is so aggressive and it goes so well with Melissa’s drumming and Brady’s commanding vocals. I know I said I’d change my mind within hours as to what my favourite song is, but Spun is definitely up there. I love the sheer uregency  in Brady’s vocals. Like I said earlier, he has such a commanding voice and they both have such an amazing presence on stage too. This song is the one that could set the tamest of the tame free. It could make the calmest person you know just go apeshit.

Hazing closes the EP, and although it’s a fantastic song; it’ll make you want more and more. Thankfully they have enough records to keep you satisfied for now, but it’s definitely a song that shows them for all they are. Call them Post-Punk, call them Industrial or whatever- but genres don’t count here at all. There is something super special about Sextile, and it’s what lures you in. They’ll have you hooked in no time.

A lot of the bands I listen to from Los Angeles sound like you could listen to them on the beach doing a whole load of nothing. Sextile are the polar opposite. They make you want to wander round the city streets late at night in search of something that the daytime cannot give you.

If they are playing a show near you, go see them. Part of the attraction is the relationship between them and the crowd. It’s utterly cult-like, so be well prepared to be initiated.

SEXTILE: Soup Kitchen, Manchester. 16/09/2018.

dl7zqv8x4aazgjm

If you ever wondered what Suicide and Cold Cave would sound like if they launched head first into each other, they would sound like Sextile. I’ve been a HUGE fan of the band for quite some time now, and last night I finally got to see their live show. When I lived in London, my two favourite venues were The Old Blue Last and The Shacklewell Arms. Now I’m in Manchester, I wondered if I would find a venue that could have the same dark, basement feel. Soup Kitchen was the host of the show last night, and my god it is just the perfect venue for a band like Sextile. If I was in a band, this is where I would want to play. Over the past three years I wondered what their show would be like, and last night just exceeded every single expectation I had.

One of the many things that I loved about the show was how Brady commands the stage without even having to engage in pointless talk between songs. He has this way about him that just makes you walk closer towards the stage and really listen. He’s like a preacher with the way he is on stage. He’s got this wonderful presence about him that makes you wish you could see this band every night. Melissa is one of the best drummers you’ll ever see. She’s got a Bobby Gillespie sound going on (think Psychocandy) and as she stands towering over her drum kit hitting the drum skins with such passion without breaking a sweat is just amazing. She’s effortlessly cool. Apologies for my ignorance, but I cannot remember the name of the guitarist- all I know is that she was brilliant, and during the second to last song she joined Melissa on the drums and they both had this tribal-like sound going on.

Friday saw the band release the EP titled, 3. I’ll be writing about that soon but for now let’s stick with the show. They played most of the EP, and it was so great to hear it live. I’ve been playing 3 on my journey to and from work on Friday, and I loved the grittiness of it. I love how they have a Gang Of Four sound going on mixed with The Vacant Lots. The band may be from L.A but they definitely sound like a band that have been roaming the alleyways of Berlin during a harsh winter. They absolutely ripped through the song, Paradox last night and it was definitely one of the songs that made the crowd go nuts.

I’ve always said that Manchester crowds are the best, and last night’s show was a prime example of this. The crowd was made up of people just having the best time dance so care free to a band that they love. The atmosphere was brilliant, and who cares that the show didn’t sell out. It’s better to have the right amount of fans there who love the band rather than a group of drunk idiots stumble in and be obnoxious. Sextile are equally captivating on stage as they are on record. The venue was perfect for as band like this. You felt like you had fallen into the hands of a cult as soon as they stepped on stage. I loved when they performed Drop You (it’s my current favourite from the new EP) but to be honest, they could have just performed a whole bunch of nonsense and I would have loved it. I just love this band so much. I think this might have been only their second time playing the UK and since then, their line-up has changed but regardless of band members- Sextile are just fantastic.

When they performed, Who Killed Six, that’s when it really kicked in how much I loved the show and wish it could have lasted forever. I LOVE this song so much and it’s my favourite off Albeit Living. Its song that I love playing ridiculously loud, and to witness it live was just nothing short of perfect for me. I’ve not been to many shows this year, but this is the one I’ll be holding very dear to me.

If you ever have the opportunity to see Sextile live, GO.

THE EYEBERRIES.

With lyrics being a huge part of why I end loving most of the bands I’m into, writing about The Eyeberries should be tough for me as there is virtually no singing. I can do it though, the music is too good to pass up on.

The Eyeberries are a Horror Rock/Garage Rock band from Russia. Their music sounds like The Cramps on speed mixed with several tequillas. It is a massively big sound that I really can’t enough of. I love how the instrumental songs can really let you create your own ideas of what is going on. Maybe you’ve come to face with a monster, maybe you’re having a dance-off in some weird bar or maybe you’re just doing nothing. You can do absolutely anything to their music, and their music takes you everywhere. I love this sound so much- it just makes me wish I had even a hint of musical talent.

I thought I’d miss hearing someone sing, but I don’t. I love how it just speaks for itself. Maybe hearing a voice or two over these super slick songs would just ruin it. The Eyeberries are such a joy to listen to.Take the song, Stampede for instance. Listening to it, you can’t imagine what they could sing about- the music alone feels like a stampede. Like a heard of us Punks coming for you.

They’ve got a fair amount of songs to really sink your teeth into. At the moment I’ve got their demos on repeat. I have no idea how you could class them as demos- they are far too good to not be the finished product. There is something really special about this band, and you easily sense it with your first listen. I adore how they are influenced by the bands I am obsessed with. We all know that The Cramps are probably the greatest band of all time, right? The Eyeberries take that eeriness that The Cramps had and construct this mind-blowing world that just makes you feel like someone slipped something in your drink.

The Eyeberries give you this awesome woozy feeling when you listen to them. They just make you want to have a really good time when you listen to them. Part of their songs feel like a trip to the beach, the other part feels like a Halloween party gone too far. It makes you feel as if Vincent Price is lurking behind a door just ready to attack. I’m intrigued as to how their live shows play out. I guess being able to see their expressions as they totally obliterate their instruments would make the songs truly come to life.

They’ve got a wealth of songs that just give you that comforting Surfer Rock feel. As you watch the waves crash and swallow up whoever dares to go near them, as the evening moon settles deep onto the water sparkling like tiny jewels. The Eyeberries are one of the best bands I’ve heard in this genre, but I have no idea what this is. Basically, The Eyeberries are one of the best bands I’ve ever heard. It’s like The Cramps bent over The Beach Boys and created something no one has dared to do before. I love them. I love their sound and how they just immediately have this hold on you within seconds of listening to them.

I have no information to give you about this remarkable band. I have no idea how many are in the band, who they are or any other trivial information. However, what I can tell you, is that they will blow your mind. They’ll make you dance in ways you never thought you could. They’ll transport you back in time then lob you right into the future. They are just such a fantastic band to listen to.

With more and more grey skies looming, they just make it feel like summer forever. Blast out their hits and have yourself a real cool time. You deserve it.
