Do you ever listen to something, and you think “how did I go so long without this?!” I have. Many times. One band I can put there is Fortezza and they are about to release their new record next month.
Windmill will just blow you away; this record has 14 songs to just melt your brain and take you on some wild trip. You know how you get those records that just hit you right in the gut immediately? That’s exactly what Fortezza have done on this record. Is it one of the best records we will hear all year? Absolutely. For me, it is everything I could want from a hard-hitting Garage Rock record. There are some strong Psych sounds on this record too, and when that kicks in you feel like you are heading right into Fortezza’s world with no sign of ever leaving. Why would you want to? A Horse, A Horseman is one of the most intense moments on the record. The vocals are INSANE! The whole song feels like you have stepped into a David Lynch film. You feel on edge but it doesn’t phase you. This is such an incredible song and I’ll probably call it as my favourite. I mean, I will change my mind the more times I play the record but for now, this is the one I keep going back to.
The sheer heaviness of this record is so intense and such a joy to listen to. If this record will be your first time listening to the band, then you are definitely in for a wild ride. The more I play the record, the more I long for shows. Can you imagine this record being played live? You’d want them to end on A Horse, A Horseman and they would play it louder than anyone could handle. We’d leave the venue deaf and changed. Beautiful! This whole record is a work of art, and you can’t help but really fall in love with it. Every single song is made to be played sky high. Every single song sounds so perfect. What I love about Fortezza is that there is no one at all you can liken them to. The closest I can give you is maybe the Pixies (Green Tea has something about it that reminds me of Fugazi and Pixies, which is always a great thing.) But hey, we don’t need comparisons at all! Fortezza have such a song sound, and it is that sound that makes it pretty hard to believe that this is only their second full length record.
Windmill is such an exciting record, and they sure make a hell of a lot of noise for three people. It is such a riot of a record, and every single song feels like it could be an anthem. Whether it’s in a massive arena or a basement bar- these songs are made to be heard loudly, and sung back to them even louder. They are the kind of band that make you want to have a sore throat the next day from screaming along to the songs. This is such a ferocious record, and if you don’t believe me- play title song Windmill as loud as you can. Let that fury from the song rattle in your chest. Let it make you feel like you’ve GOT to scream the words back and smash things in your bedroom. Let it allow you to unleash all your frustrations; it is one of those songs that just moves you in ways you cannot describe.
Fortezza are the type of band that will make you fall even more in love with music again. The first listen will get you in the gut, and when you keep on listening to it- you will feel like this record has possibly become part of you. 14 songs that will utterly blow your mind. It’s the exact kind of record you hope a kid hears, and it inspires them to start their own band. There is something so powerful about this band and their sound. No Play is a straight up Punk anthem, and it makes you just want to trash your room and other peoples. Maybe don’t do that, but you know what I mean. It’s such a passionate record and I wish there were 14 more songs on the record.
Some bands instantly leave a lasting impression on you when you listen to them, and I can safely say that Fortezza are one of those bands. Their new record comes out next month (5th March) and I urge you to get yourself a copy, and fall in love with this masterpiece of a noise-fest.
