Aaliyah Dana Haughton

There’s one singer who for me, was and always will be my favourite. I may love other singers, but this one is the most special. I hate that I have to write it all in past tense when talking about her.

Today would’ve been Aaliyah’s 30th birthday. I remember first hearing Back & Forth and falling in love. I was only young, but it was enough. I started really caring about music because of her, and if I’m honest when I hear R&B singers now, I can’t help but think “Aaliyah did it first.” I think most of her fans feel the same way. Her sound was like no other, yet every other sound a bit like her. Her dancing was flawless and her voice was relaxing. You could listen to One In A Million and be sent to your own little world.

Although she was 22 when she died, she accomplished a hell of a lot. Two successful films, 3 amazing albums and an army of loyal fans. I managed to finally get hold of Romeo Must Die on DVD  a few months ago! However, her eating a heart in Queen Of The Damned did make me feel a bit nauseas! Watching those performances, there’s no denying that she would’ve played lead in a bunch of films and more than likely won a bunch of awards!

I’m going to attempt to list my Top 10 Aaliyah tracks. I’ll probably change my mind as soon as I click on “Publish.” 🙂

10.Journey To The Past

9.Messed Up

8.Miss You

7.If Your Girl Only Knew

6.At Your Best(You Are Love)

5.Try Again

4.We Need A Resolution

3.More Than A Woman

2.Turn The Page

1.One In A Million

I want to make it more than my Top 10 because I feel Hot Like Fire should be in there and 4 Page Letter. Those two are timeless. Classic videos too. So for the record, I’ll probably want to change my mind but won’t. Can’t forger rare tracks like Are You Ready?, Steady Ground and No Days Go By. Oh, and I Am Music (Timbaland and Static)

She was the only singer that I really wanted to meet. Her signature sound/style will never get old and will continue to influence.

This is probably the longest blog entry I’ve done, and is probably quite lame/pathetic but..whatever.

I forgot to add this video I found on YouTube, it’s a live performance which shows Aaliyah quite possibly at her best. I love it 🙂 Aaliyah- If Your Girl Only Knew (Live)

Happy Birthday Aaliyah ~/.\~

Morrissey- I Am Throwing My Arms Around Paris.

Finally! A video to the new Morrissey track. It’s a bloody good video. Why? Well, it has 2 cute dogs, Morrissey looking good (as usual) and his drummer seems to fly over his drumkit (around 2.13)

I’m pretty sure Years Of Refusal will pick up where Ringleader Of The Tormentors left off.

Enjoy 🙂

Morrissey- I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris.

Uh Huh Her

Uh Huh Her, not just an album by the legend PJ Harvey. Oh no, it’s the name of a not so new female American two piece band.

Electo/rock ish band, I suppose is how you could describe them. Personally, I’d say they were wonderful but as usual I am being biased and I never really tell you about bands I don’t like 🙂 Not A Love Song is one of the few tracks I cannot stop playing which is probably annoying anyone that knows me. I’m not going to apologise though. I love Uh Huh Her and I’m not the only one.

One thing that is ever so slightly pissing is that I can’t get hold of the album due to England being ever so slightly crap with getting imported CDs. However, I’ll make do with watching the videos on YouTube 🙂

Ron Asheton.

A shit start to the year, Ron Asheton (guitarist/bassist) from Iggy Pop & The Stooges has been found dead. He was only 60 years old.

The Stooges were one of the greatest bands ever, and I’m sure a lot would agree.

Play The Stooges loud, and hear the greatness of them. A remarkable band. I’m not one for regrets, but I really wish I went to Get Loaded In The Park last year, I really do.

RIP Ron. I bet Lester Bangs greeted you with a beer 😉

2009

This year watch out for :

Little Boots

Uh Huh Her

Emmy The Great (We Almost Had A Baby came out last year, she’s also on tour around February)

Lightspeed Champion (his new album, hopefully out this year, will be one of the best. Yes.)

Gossip (again, the new album should be out this year. PLEASE TOUR THE UK AGAIN!!)

Morrissey (Years Of Refusal will be one of the best albums of the year. UK tour in May. ’nuff said)

The Novellos

VV Brown

Hip Parade

Thecocknbullkid (beautiful voice, beautiful music, beautiful lyrics, beautoful face, beautiful!)

And of course…………..

Florence And The Machine 🙂

Florence And The Machine….yes, AGAIN!

I adore Candi Staton’s track, You Got The Love. I love the version by The Source too.

However, as a massive Florence And The Machine I was reduced to tears when I heard her version of this beautiful song. The emotion in it and the words always get to me. But her version just…I have no idea, but I know it’s one of the best covers I’ve heard in a very long time.

What I love about this YouTube clip is how everyone in the audience has their hands in the air and belting it out with her. I wish I was there.  I think I may have to spend £15 to see her on that NME tour..even though she’s the only act I like on the line up! If she played this I’d be a wreck. It’s a very special song to me, and to hear it covered so perfectly makes me stupidly happy.

You can get the full version off iTunes or if you buy her single Dog Days Are Over. It needs to make the album and be made into a single. People need to hear just how amazing and beautiful this cover is.

Her album is hopefully coming out in May. I cannot wait!

Florence And The Machine- You Got The Love (cover)

Florence And The Machine…AGAIN!

As you know, I planned to write about Florence as much as I could, where I could until she got signed. Well, as you all know- SHE HAS BEEN SIGNED!!!! Of course it’s nothing to do with me, and just because she has been signed does not mean I’ll stop writing about this talented young woman. Oh no.

The other morning I woke to read that she had won Brit Awards Critics Choice Award 2009. I was so happy, it made my week.  I can’t think of any other person worthy of that award right now. If she performs at the Brits (I think she is) I am 100000000000000000 % sure she will blow everyone away with her energy and voice.

The album’s out next year and I’m positive it’ll be one of, if not THE best album of 2009!

Timbaland Top 10.

I was listening to some of my old music earlier and heard a bunch of Timbaland’s old stuff. So I thought, a Top 10 is much needed. Why? I have no idea. Maybe because it’s Sunday and I’ve not got anything to do 9I have got stuff to do, I’m just not doing it!)

So, here’s my Top 10 Timbaland Produced Tracks :

10.  Timbaland & Magoo feat. Static- We At It Again

9.  Ginuwine- What\’s So Different

8. Nas feat. Aaliyah- You Won\’t See Me Tonight

7. Missy Elliott feat. Nicole Wray and MC Solaar- All N My Grill

6. Bubba Sparxxx- Ugly

5. Ms.Jade feat. Timbaland and Nelly Furtado- Ching Ching

4. Ginuwine- Pony

3. Timbaland, Aaliyah and Static- I Am Music

2. Aaliyah- One In A Million

1. Aaliyah feat. Timbaland- Are You That Somebody

There you go. My Top 10 Timbaland tracks. I was unsure whether or not to swap 1 with 1, however if it was my Top 10 Aaliyah tracks then One In A Million would be Number 1. No questions asked. My favourite song ever by my favourite singer ever- but that’s a different blog entry, which will be soon!

Girls Aloud

Girls Aloud. Some will dismiss them as manufactured bollocks. I, on the other hand LOVE them. Nothing beats Love Machine. However, Call The Shots is up there.

Now, I can sort of see why you’d be quick to write them off. But, they’ve had 19 or 20 hits, very successful albums and they’ve lasted longer than most of these people that win these music reality bollocks.

Some of their songs are a bit annoying. The Promise is a killer track- even my mum likes it! Says it reminds her of the 60s! Go Mum! I was never a fan of Sound Of The Underground, I like the music but the way they sing the verses creeps me out a tiny bit. The Show is amusing, so is the video. I won’t try and convert you to like them, but come on..LET’S GO ESKIMO OUT INTO THE BLUEEEEEE!!!! 😉

Rolling Stone Top 100 Singers Of All Time.

What the hell!!?? Have you seen this list? It is awful. Truly awful. Awful like…I can’t describe it, I can only say that I am full of disappointment and disgust.

How on Earth can Christina Aguilera be placed higher than Patti Smith, Mary J Blige, Iggy Pop, Morrissey, Annie Lennox.

Aretha Franklin is number 1. Which I’m okay with, at least it wasn’t someone like CHRISTINA CHUFFIN’ AGUILERA!!!! Beyonce isn’t in the list, neither is Aaliyah. What the crap???!!! Bob Dylan is only number 7.

I’m going to stop before I cry.
