The Strokes.

Everyone has something that gets them through the shit life throws at them. There is always one song that you associate with getting you through your own hell.

I don’t have one song in particular, I have one album that no matter what- it will make me find some motivation to just carry on and not let the shit takeover.

For me, the album is the debut album by The Strokes, Is This It. This album has been almost like a crutch for me, and I know others feel the same way. Every single song on it just makes you feel alive and less alone.

Without getting too personal in this, since the start of this year, I’ve had to adjust and deal with something I never though I would. However, I played Is This It pretty much daily just to keep myself sane.

There is no denying that Someday is one of the greatest songs ever created. I don’t know what the meaning of the song is, but I never really look for the actual meaning in songs. I prefer to make my own. What’s my take on Someday? Oh you do not need to know dear reader. Maybe it’s the same as yours, maybe it’s not.

Someday gives me hope that one day, everything will be alright. It may not be soon, but one day, it’ll all be okay.

I’m writing this listening to the album and it’s distracting me from writing something of worth.

Is This It is nearly a decade old. It still has that raw sound to it. It’s an album a lot of bands wish they could create. It’s an album that will always be relevant. The Strokes will always be relevant. Who knows if we will ever get another new album or if all the solo projects are a way of letting the fans know that The Strokes are no more? Obviously if they were to announce they were over millions of hearts would break and beg for one last tour. I know I would.

Everyone knows the intro to Last Nite, and I guarantee if this song is played in a shop or at a party you will find at least one person singing the opening line with Julian, just like Julian, “Laaaaaaaaaast niiiiiiiiiiite.” I bet you’re going to play it now and do exactly that. Go on, do it. You know you want to.

The title track is the one I hold very dear to me. The amount of times where I have just thought “f**ck this” and not had an ounce of motivation left, wondering what exactly is the point- Is This It is like a comfort blanket for me. I suppose that makes me some kind of weirdo.

I’m going to say something that may make you think “what the hell is she on about?!” Have you heard About You Know by Sugarbabes? I’m sure you have. Well, do you think the intro is a rip off of Hard To Explain? I’m not sure if any members of Sugarbabes listen to The Strokes, but it makes you wonder. I’ve told a few friends about this, and they’ve noticed. Maybe it was to just humour me.

As far as debut albums go, Is This It is easily one of the greatest. There is not one thing in particular that make it so wonderful and timeless. Every track is brilliant, no album fillers. The lyrics, the music, the production and Julian’s voice are just astounding. Although it was released in 2001, it sounded ahead of its time then and it still does now. The rawness of it reminds me of an Iggy Pop album which is always a good thing.

It’s an album for the summer, the winter, the highs, the lows, the good, the bad, love, heartbreak, romance and despair.

I bet some people that bought the album based on the cover have purchased Room On Fire and First Impressions Of Earth because they know that The Strokes are one of the greatest bands. What The Ramones were to New York City in the 1970s, The Strokes are just that now and always will be.

All I ask is that they put out another album, and tour!

Influential Women-Part 2. Alison Mosshart.

Yeah, I know I intended to make this a weekly thing….it’s been months. Sorry!

I am useless with money. I get my wages every week, and I am guaranteed to buy at least one thing that is of no use to me. This week, I bought a bike. I know you think it’s not exactly useless. But, I seem to have forgotten how to ride a bike. It’s currently in the back garden. Every time I wander into the kitchen, I stare at the bike and a few insulting words come into my head. I will not be beaten by this damn bike. I’ve been told over and over that you don’t forget how to ride a bike. I guess I’ve just got a shite memory, I think that’s genetic.

So, I’m sitting in my room listening to The Dead Weather. This will not be about Jack White; it will be about Alison Mosshart. A woman who I think is ridiculously under-appreciated and beyond beautiful. If I could look like anyone, it’d be her. She’s just got this “thing” about her that makes her some kind of rick goddess. The way she dresses, the way she sings and the way she throws herself around on stage is, as clichéd as it sounds, is effortlessly cool.

When I saw The Kills live last year, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She had this presence that I’ve never seen in any band or singer before. The band didn’t say much to the crowd, yet both Jamie and Alison had this chemistry on stage that just left me in awe. Midnight Boom was quite frankly the most underrated album of last year. Anyone who didn’t find the video to Last Day Of Magic strangely sexy is silly. They beat each other up! Alison also shoots Jack White to pieces in video to Treat Me Like Your Mother, which again, is sexy. Maybe I’m just weird, but if I was to get beaten up by Alison Mosshart, I’d ignore the pain and love the fact I was getting beaten up by a gorgeous woman. I’m doing myself no favours here at all. I should probably learn how to ride my bike. It’s black and red, it folds up. No idea how I fold or unfold it. One of the peddles is a bit dodgy. I’m scared I’ll be riding it and the bastard will just fold up.

Alison’s voice needs more recognition. Have you heard her when she was in Discount? Check them out; I think some tracks are still up on Last Fm.

In short, Alison Mosshart is sexy. Extremely beautiful. I hate the word “sexy” it’s so tacky isn’t it? I’ve never been called sexy, I don’t expect I ever will. I think there’s something quite creepy about it. I’m not sure what though, and I’ve used it a few times to describe Alison here. Then again, there’s a few people you can describe as being sexy without sounding like a weirdo in a mac eating spam sandwiches (this isn’t me. I don’t own a mac, nor do I eat meat.)

Maybe I’ll learn to ride my bike listening to The Kills. Thing is, I’m sure I’ll just get even more distracted than I usually do and just end up cycling to somewhere unknown and have no idea how to get back home.

I’m aware that this is probably utter nonsense. I’m not going to apologise, I do it all too often. Alison Mosshart should be more appreciated. She and Jamie should also put out a new album, even though it’s only been a year since Midnight Boom was released. The Kills are raw, in an Iggy Pop & The Stooges sense. That’s probably why I adore them so much. Jamie Hince is a killer guitar player, just like Jimmy Shaw from Metric. They both have this intense energy that you can’t take your eyes off. They also make it look so simple. But, when you watch someone do something that they love, of course it looks easy.

Was there any point to this? Probably not, but there’d be no fun it if there was! I now have cramp in my legs from sitting down writing this. Guess I won’t be riding my bike this evening!

Lungs CD Content :)

When did I last make a post about Florence? Well, it’s been a few days..maybe a week. So, I’ve just been on YouTube watching some new live clips. These live performances are from the album, Lungs..the special CD content. Apparently my copy of it is meant to show me these clips, but it doesn’t! So, for those who haven’t seen these performances yet…enjoy! Probably the best version of Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) I’ve seen..oh and of Dog Days Are Over and Between Two Lungs 🙂

Between Two Lungs.

Dog Days Are Over.

La Roux-Cover My Eyes.

Every so often, I find a song that, as daft as it may sound- breaks my heart. I think I’ve found a song that will make me bawl even if I’m in a good mood.

La Roux’s debut album is one of the best albums of this year, there’s a track on it that I am currently listening to (on repeat) and I honestly feel the need to go to my room and cry like a baby. But I won’t. Instead I will keep playing it over and over. Being in awe of how beautiful and painful Elly Jackson’s voice is. The London Gospel Choir feature on it, which just make it so emotional. The words rip right through me…and lead me onto thinking about someone. However, this blog is not for such personal information!

I’ve read that this song is too emotional for Elly to sing live. I’m pretty sure if I heard Cover My Eyes live, I’d be a total mess. Still, it’d be amazing to see La Roux and The London Gospel Choir do this live together.

I’m pretty sure all of us have felt like at this at some point in our lives. Or have yet to feel it, or are currently feeling it. It’s a bastard of a feeling. So, I apologise if the song makes you cry. Hopefully you’ll hear just how beautiful the song is. Listening to it through headphones is better, for some reason you can hear The London Gospel Choir more clear…or maybe my hearing is getting worse!

I must mention, that musically it reminds me of Wonderful Life by Black..I love that song.

New York Dolls.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to develope Swine Flu. Or, it could be hayfever and I’ve caught a cold off my niece or nephew. Obviously if I had Swine Flu, I’d be in my bed feeling sorry for myself drifting in and out of a deep slumber.

So, the point of this post is for me to mention one of the best bands ever….NEW YORK DOLLS!

I’ve got a few albums, and I recently found a copy of their debut album at my mum’s. In all honesty, I have got the coolest mum in the world. So yeah, she has their album, so I asked her why. She told me she likes them, I never ever knew this. This woman played me Bob Dylan and Kraftwerk probably when I was in the womb y’know? I was pretty shocked to find such an album amongst a pile of books.

You can see why Morrissey loves them amongst a load of others. Simply one of the greatest bands ever and I feel that they are not appreciated enough. These guys are still going (David and Sylvain are the only founding members left). Their latest album is one I regard as one of the best of this year, yet I know not many will have given it the time of day. SHAME ON YOU.

Subway Train is my favourite New York Dolls track, but Jet Boy will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart.

So, stop reading my blog and go listen to some New York Dolls! 😉

Mercury Music Prize 2009.

So, the nominations for the Mercury Music Prize were announced today. Now, I don’t give a shit about this awar..or any award. In fact, I feel awards are quite pointless..but after seeing this year’s list, I sort of do give a shit..for obvious reasons 😉

Here they are :

Bat For Lashes – ‘Two Suns’
Florence And The Machine – ‘Lungs’- WINNER!!!!!
Friendly Fires – ‘Friendly Fires’
Glasvegas – ‘Glasvegas’
The Horrors – ‘Primary Colours’
La Roux – ‘La Roux’
Led Bib – ‘Sensible Shoes’
The Invisible – ‘The Invisible’
Lisa Hannigan – ‘Sea Sew’
Kasabian – ‘West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum’
Speech Debelle – ‘Speech Therapy’
Sweet Billy Pilgrim – ‘Twice Born Men’

Nice to see The Horrors there, and La Roux..two bands I love but you know that Flo has to win! 😉

This is why….

… I LOVE FLORENCE!

Watch this. Watch it many times. Watch it if you want smile until your face aches. Watch it until you cry from pure happiness. Watch it and feel like you were there. Watch it, and you will see just how motherfeckin’ amazing Florence Welch is. I’ve seen this live…but this clip of it..no words can describe how beautiful it is. The crowd were amazing. Booing her because they didn’t want her to leave. The chant of “GO FLO'” if any of you are seeing her on her next tour…PLEASE do that chant! It’s wicked. This is the best performance on YouTube of this..and it shits on the orignal from a great height!

Florence And The Machine-You\’ve Got The Love (John Peel Tent, Glastonbury 2009.)

It’s fair to say that John Peel would love Florence and would’ve thought this performance was just fantastic.

x

La Roux.

This proves that La Roux are an amazing band and that Elly Jackson not only has a beautiful face, but a beautiful voice too!

I love the album a hell of a lot. Apparently the album is about one person (and they know who they are, says Elly) and when I listen to it..I can pretty much think of someone I know too. It was a hard album for me to listen to, but it’s really good. I cannot fault it at all.

Anyway, this is my favourite track off the album and I love hearing it like this. Wish they did Cover My Eyes as part of the session!

LUNGS HAS GONE GOLD!!!!

LUNGS HAS GONE GOLD!!!!

It’s been out just under a week and it’s gone GOLD!

I’d like to hug and kiss everyone on the cheek that has bought the album. It is bloody amazing!

She’s at T In The Park…she headlined the Future Sounds Stage (I think it’s called that) today. She also did a lovely acoustic version of Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) for BBC3 which made me ever so slightly teary eyed.

I need to meet her don’t I?! :p
