Marvin Gaye.

I’m going to be real quick with this because I’m watching Reservoir Dogs. Earlier Sky Arts showed an old Marvin Gaye concert from 1976. That man was a legend. If I could sing like him, I’d get some ladies…right? Oh maybe not. ANYWAY…Marvin was the definition of soul. He was art. He was everything music needed. Here’s why :

Garbage

I grew up listening to The Cure, The Smiths, Bob Dylan and Billie Holiday- my mum had/has amazing music taste. But, the first band I remember finding on my own was back in 1995. Garbage. I remember seeing Shirley Manson’s fiery red hair and pale skin and just being in awe. In awe of her beauty, her voice. In awe of Steve, Butch and Duke. This band became my life as I got older.

I was an awkward teenager. I was painfully shy and quiet. I’m an awkward adult. Garbage were my comfort blanket. Shirley Manson sang out my frustrations and all that was getting to me. She was and still is, my role model. I do go on about how I adore Morrissey. Shirley is my female Morrissey. I love them the same amount, and they have both saved me from what I wish to never feel again. Garbage will always be the band I can depend on to get me through shit. Just like Moz/The Smiths.

I couldn’t really pick one song in particular that’s my favourite. I love all of them equally. I wish I could see them live, that’s what I want from life. Guys, make this shit happen yeah? GOOD.

Here’s a few songs by Garbage that I adore, in no order :

Run Baby Run.

It’s All Over But The Crying.

Special.

The Trick Is To Keep Breathing.

You Look So Fine.

Right Between The Eyes.

Milk.

Nobody Loves You.

Also, beautifulgarbage is underrated.

Lucy Pearl.

One thing that made me insanely hapy back in 2000 was the band Lucy Pearl. Lucy Pearl were made up of my favourite members of 3 bands I adored. Dawn from En Vogue. Raphael Saadiq from Tony!Toni!Tone! and of course, Ali Shaheed Muhammad from A Tribe Called Quest. Honestly, it was the best musical group to come out in a long time. Then they split up, or well..Dawn left and they replaced her with Joi. NOT THE SAME AT ALL. Just sayin’. Anyway, they only had one album out and with all my heart, I wish they’d come back together and put out another great album. The album (self titled) was just pure soul. There was no denying how wonderful this album truly was. I miss music like this. I miss it being so raw and soulful. Music lacks a bit of soul right now. So basically, what I’m saying is- Lucy Pearl, please reform…even if its for just one more album.

Although, Dawn has joined En Vogue again and apparently an album is due out late this year with a single out around September? Oh please be true! I just love Dawn to be honest.

Anita Blay aka cocknbullkid has lovely track out for you to download for FREE! I love her music. I just adore it. Everything about it just….mind=BLOWN. I want her to tour. I want to be at the front and sing to every song. Her music may have sad lyrics yet the beat is joyful. I love that. If you make music like that, I instantly love you. Yes I’ve made errors with my music choice in the past- but this is OFF THE HOOK (sorry…I had to say it.)

BASICALLY.

I’m just insanely happy about this song. Seriously. I cannot put it into words. Please please download it from HERE. RIGHT NOW.

Adelaide’s Cape-Last Sleep In Albion EP.

When you’ve toured with Alessi’s Ark and played on the same stage as First Aid Kit, you know you cannot go wrong at all.

Adelaide’s Cape is a young fellow named Sam Taylor. There’s no story or meaning behind his stage name. It sounds good, you don’t need to know anymore. His EP sounds good too, you need to know more. So allow me to tell you.

A 4 track delight of EP which is very relaxing. Just what you need on a Friday. End of the week, perfect way to just relax. As it is only a 4 track EP you do wish there was more, but as they say “good things come to those who wait.”

Opening with This Fiction, a country-esque feel yet still folky. If you don’t enjoy this song then you’ve probably have far too much wax in your ears and you’re not listening properly. Sam’s voice reminds me a wee bit like Scott Matthews which is never a bad thing. The romantic, painful line “I miss you but you haven’t left.” We’ve all felt this way about someone whether they care or not. I’m just going to throw it out there now, I want Ellie Goulding and Sam to duet. It would be amazing. It needs to happen. Their voices would sound so beautiful together.

My favourite track is Girl Of The Land. I just love his voice on this track and the guitar. It’s beautiful, it’s painful and it’s pure. The best kind of music is just like that. Stay is a beaut too,”Leaving you was the best thing I did”harsh, honest-brilliant.

The EP is just wonderful and I urge you to click on this link HERE.

Try before you buy? Well, click HERE.

WATCH THIS.

AND THIS.

Have an interview too! < One of the best interviews I’ve seen anyone do. Lovely.

Go support this lovely fellow from Norwich, and buy his EP.

Takeda

Dear reader, treasure your local music scene. Go to your local and watch. Possibly learn. Your local pub will put on bands that you pay nothing to watch and in a few years time- they’ll probably be on a headline tour at £15 a ticket. And you can say “I saw them before they got big…for free.”

Allow me to introduce you to some wonderful folk from Norwich. Takeda are a 3 piece band and have recently supported the lovely Jessica Hoop at Norwich Arts Centre and are constantly being praised and played by BBC Norfolk Introducing. Their MySpace page may only have 3 tracks (1 being live) up but good things come to those who wait. They remind me a bit of Mumford & Sons, which I’m sure they will get a lot due to lazy journalism. To redeem myself with that lazy comparison, vocally the sound reminds me slightly of Fyfe Dangerfield and Orlando Weeks from The Maccabees. Which I personally love. A lot.

Sweetheard is my favourite track they have up on their page. I just love the intro and the crashing cymbal.

Takeda’s debut EP, Hufsa will be out on September 6th on Dustbowl Records.

Enjoy.

The Long Blondes.

It’s been well over a year since The Long Blondes called it quits. It’s been a year since my record collection has felt a bit naked without having another record by The Long Blondes there. When I listen to them, I sometimes so want to cry. I’ll never hear A Knife For The Girls or Heaven Help The New Girl or Century live. EVER. This breaks my heart. I can handle girls ignoring me…and saying “NAH I DON’T LIKE YOU AT ALL.” Trust, I can handle that (you get used to it.) BUT…BUT…I never get over a band I was so in love with just call it a day. NO WAY. I don’t adjust to that. I just don’t. My heart hurts a bit when I listen to them. I just want another record. That’s all.

So to add salt to the wound as they say, here’s some videos…showing why I love The Long Blondes:

Weekend Without Makeup (Live).

Five Ways To End It (Live).

Separated By Motorways.

Giddy Stratospheres.
