Albums.

I couldn’t think of a decent title for this post, so “Albums” will just have to do!

So, I’m going to assume that most of you have had your heart metaphorially broken and also again, metaphorically, had your worl come to an end. You know the feeling. You do dumb shit to adjust to the changes. You have a messed up sleep patterns nd food, amongst other things repulses you.

To adjust to all this, this year I went to a stupid amount of gigs and bought a load of albums that quite possible, saved my ass.

So these albums came out this year and were a bit of a crutch to me:

La Roux- La Roux. This album is about one person, said Elly Jackson. Pretty obvious too. Every song pretty much sums everything up. I don’t need to say anymore.

Florence + The Machine- Lungs. I don’t need to tell you just how much this album means to me. You already know. When I went to see her live in May, she said Hurricane Drunk is about an ex and other stuff. Pretty much hit me. Hard. As did Cosmic Love, that breaks me every time. Beautiful song.

Spinnerette-Spinnerette. Not the whole album, but just two songs- Driving Song and Baptized By Fire. ’nuff said.

Golden Silvers-True Romance. Amazing album. Makes all the crap seem insignificant..even if it isn’t. Beautiful album. Brilliant live.

The Dead Weather-Horehound. Agressive and sexy. No more to say!

Metric-Fantasies. I think Blindness changed everything. I spoke to Emily about this one track. I cannot put it into words. Excellent album.

Camera Obscura-My Maudlin Career. This album is seriously underrated. Album of the year? Top 5 place!

The Horrors-Primary Colours. Better than Strange House. Fascinating band.

Morrissey-Years Of Refusal. I do not need to tell you just how extrodinary Morrissey is.

Doll & The Kicks-Doll & The Kicks. Again, another brilliant live band. If You Care made me cry when I saw them live. Can easily see why Moz loves them.

The Enemy-Music For The People. Astoundingly good.

Finally…this one album came out a long long time ago. This album is one album I listen to every day. I’ve never got bored of it. It is…..

Is This It by The Strokes. And tomorrow, I shall be getting “Is This It” tattooed on my wrist. I love this album so much! Timeless. Utterly timeless.

I suppose there was no real point to this post and I’ve probably missed out a few albums. My memory is not my strongest point šŸ˜‰

Notorious B.I.G.

Christopher Wallace. Biggie Smalls. Big Poppa. Notorious B.I.G. Whatever you wish to call him, it’s fair to say that he was a poet at best. No other rapper had a flow like his, yet they still try- I don’t need to drop names, but if I did it wouldn’t be in a disrespectful way. Jay-Z, just like Biggie doesn’t write down his rhymes, they just come out. Everyone knows that.

Brooklyn’s Finest is one of the best rap duets, two of the best rappers at the time on the same record. What’s there not to love? It’s just likethe Big L and Tupac duet (buy The Big PIcture, fantastic album).

I remember hearing about Tupac and Biggie’s death, I was only 10/11, but I knew just how much of a big deal it was and how horrific it was, and still is. You can’t help but wonder what it’d be like if they were still around. Maybe we wouldn’t have such toss polluting music channels and radio stations. Would they have made up? Who knows. The media killed them. The media is the biggest killer of them all, we need to get wise to that.

Ready To Die is one of my favourite albums ever. The depth on it is quite haunting. Anyone who is not moved by the track, Suicidal Thoughts is hollow. It’s scary but deep. Biggie had a way with words. He made th most serious subject a bit witty. I finally got round to watching the end of Notorious this evening. The funeral scene made me cry. It made me cry because it was so moving and at the same time, just wishing two of the greatest rappers were still around.

There will NEVER be another Run DMC, Tupac, Biggie, Mos Def,Ā  LL Cool J, Big L. But there will unfortunatley always be the current bullshit on the radio that people class as “rap.” When really, it’s just nothing. They seem to have forgotten what rap is and where it came from. Not to mention how it started.

A rant, of sorts.

Today whilst on the bus home from a hard day’s work (I’m lying a bit, I was there for two hours and it wasn’t exactly gruelling) I saw a few people taking photos of the bus I was on. I had never seen this before. Trains, yes. But busses? Nope. Never!

Thinking nothing of it, I carried on reading my paper and listening to my music. Then, a few stops before mine I saw this flashing light. Had I reached the end? Is this how I’m going out? On a bus? Or was it lightening? Neither. It was neither. It was more people taking photos of the bus!

Now, if these people actually went on the bus they would quite possibly be disappointed. It smelt of damp and other delightful smells. Even the outside of it looked like something from some kind of historic battle. So why on earth were they taking photos of this bus?

I will never know, nor will I understand why someone feels the need to take photos of public transport. Are they taking photos of it so they know what one looks like because they are never on time? The reasons why seem to be quite endless don’t they.

I hate having my photo taken. I seem to pull the most disturbing face when a camera is shoved in front of my face. I think most of my friends are camera obsessed. You know what I look like; you don’t need to take my photo every time we see each other. I suppose I should start worrying if one was to make a cardboard cut-out out of a photo of me. There are words for people like that.

Wherever we go, we are being photographed or filmed. It’s like being famous but without the money. Maybe we should all start posing in a flamboyant manner every time we are near a CCTV camera, provide some amusement for the spam sandwich eating loner who watches them all day. If you wish to be rebellious with your pose, flash a body part- you may get arrested for this, so don’t say you weren’t warned.

I’ll admit I do take photos of gigs that I go to, but I’m not one of these annoying creatures who film the whole gig, and put it up on the internet for everyone to see- then apologise for the shite quality. It’s shite quality because everyone around you was having a good time and you were being knocked around because you stood there like a corpse filming the gig you wanker!

You know what the most annoying part is? When you are stood enjoying the gig and some complete and utter twat pushes their arm right in front of you, presses zoom on their overpriced camera and film it. You are there at the gig. Feck those who weren’t!Ā  People like this should be banned from gigs. Another thing I hate is people ringing me from gigs, all I can hear is the baseline and a bunch of people screaming. If I wanted to hear that, I’d stand outside a bloody nightclub. I also hate being told to ring people from gigs. Why don’t you buy a ticket you cheap bastard?!

I’m 22 years old. Should I be this angry? Well, it’s not my fault that society is populated by voyeuristic twits is it!

The Strokes.

Everyone has something that gets them through the shit life throws at them. There is always one song that you associate with getting you through your own hell.

I don’t have one song in particular, I have one album that no matter what- it will make me find some motivation to just carry on and not let the shit takeover.

For me, the album is the debut album by The Strokes, Is This It. This album has been almost like a crutch for me, and I know others feel the same way. Every single song on it just makes you feel alive and less alone.

Without getting too personal in this, since the start of this year, I’ve had to adjust and deal with something I never though I would. However, I played Is This It pretty much daily just to keep myself sane.

There is no denying that Someday is one of the greatest songs ever created. I don’t know what the meaning of the song is, but I never really look for the actual meaning in songs. I prefer to make my own. What’s my take on Someday? Oh you do not need to know dear reader. Maybe it’s the same as yours, maybe it’s not.

Someday gives me hope that one day, everything will be alright. It may not be soon, but one day, it’ll all be okay.

I’m writing this listening to the album and it’s distracting me from writing something of worth.

Is This It is nearly a decade old. It still has that raw sound to it. It’s an album a lot of bands wish they could create. It’s an album that will always be relevant. The Strokes will always be relevant. Who knows if we will ever get another new album or if all the solo projects are a way of letting the fans know that The Strokes are no more? Obviously if they were to announce they were over millions of hearts would break and beg for one last tour. I know I would.

Everyone knows the intro to Last Nite, and I guarantee if this song is played in a shop or at a party you will find at least one person singing the opening line with Julian, just like Julian, ā€œLaaaaaaaaaast niiiiiiiiiiite.ā€ I bet you’re going to play it now and do exactly that. Go on, do it. You know you want to.

The title track is the one I hold very dear to me. The amount of times where I have just thought ā€œf**ck thisā€ and not had an ounce of motivation left, wondering what exactly is the point- Is This It is like a comfort blanket for me. I suppose that makes me some kind of weirdo.

I’m going to say something that may make you think ā€œwhat the hell is she on about?!ā€ Have you heard About You Know by Sugarbabes? I’m sure you have. Well, do you think the intro is a rip off of Hard To Explain? I’m not sure if any members of Sugarbabes listen to The Strokes, but it makes you wonder. I’ve told a few friends about this, and they’ve noticed. Maybe it was to just humour me.

As far as debut albums go, Is This It is easily one of the greatest. There is not one thing in particular that make it so wonderful and timeless. Every track is brilliant, no album fillers. The lyrics, the music, the production and Julian’s voice are just astounding. Although it was released in 2001, it sounded ahead of its time then and it still does now. The rawness of it reminds me of an Iggy Pop album which is always a good thing.

It’s an album for the summer, the winter, the highs, the lows, the good, the bad, love, heartbreak, romance and despair.

I bet some people that bought the album based on the cover have purchased Room On Fire and First Impressions Of Earth because they know that The Strokes are one of the greatest bands. What The Ramones were to New York City in the 1970s, The Strokes are just that now and always will be.

All I ask is that they put out another album, and tour!

Influential Women-Part 2. Alison Mosshart.

Yeah, I know I intended to make this a weekly thing….it’s been months. Sorry!

I am useless with money. I get my wages every week, and I am guaranteed to buy at least one thing that is of no use to me. This week, I bought a bike. I know you think it’s not exactly useless. But, I seem to have forgotten how to ride a bike. It’s currently in the back garden. Every time I wander into the kitchen, I stare at the bike and a few insulting words come into my head. I will not be beaten by this damn bike. I’ve been told over and over that you don’t forget how to ride a bike. I guess I’ve just got a shite memory, I think that’s genetic.

So, I’m sitting in my room listening to The Dead Weather. This will not be about Jack White; it will be about Alison Mosshart. A woman who I think is ridiculously under-appreciated and beyond beautiful. If I could look like anyone, it’d be her. She’s just got this ā€œthingā€ about her that makes her some kind of rick goddess. The way she dresses, the way she sings and the way she throws herself around on stage is, as clichĆ©d as it sounds, is effortlessly cool.

When I saw The Kills live last year, I couldn’t take my eyes off her. She had this presence that I’ve never seen in any band or singer before. The band didn’t say much to the crowd, yet both Jamie and Alison had this chemistry on stage that just left me in awe. Midnight Boom was quite frankly the most underrated album of last year. Anyone who didn’t find the video to Last Day Of Magic strangely sexy is silly. They beat each other up! Alison also shoots Jack White to pieces in video to Treat Me Like Your Mother, which again, is sexy. Maybe I’m just weird, but if I was to get beaten up by Alison Mosshart, I’d ignore the pain and love the fact I was getting beaten up by a gorgeous woman. I’m doing myself no favours here at all. I should probably learn how to ride my bike. It’s black and red, it folds up. No idea how I fold or unfold it. One of the peddles is a bit dodgy. I’m scared I’ll be riding it and the bastard will just fold up.

Alison’s voice needs more recognition. Have you heard her when she was in Discount? Check them out; I think some tracks are still up on Last Fm.

In short, Alison Mosshart is sexy. Extremely beautiful. I hate the word ā€œsexyā€ it’s so tacky isn’t it? I’ve never been called sexy, I don’t expect I ever will. I think there’s something quite creepy about it. I’m not sure what though, and I’ve used it a few times to describe Alison here. Then again, there’s a few people you can describe as being sexy without sounding like a weirdo in a mac eating spam sandwiches (this isn’t me. I don’t own a mac, nor do I eat meat.)

Maybe I’ll learn to ride my bike listening to The Kills. Thing is, I’m sure I’ll just get even more distracted than I usually do and just end up cycling to somewhere unknown and have no idea how to get back home.

I’m aware that this is probably utter nonsense. I’m not going to apologise, I do it all too often. Alison Mosshart should be more appreciated. She and Jamie should also put out a new album, even though it’s only been a year since Midnight Boom was released. The Kills are raw, in an Iggy Pop & The Stooges sense. That’s probably why I adore them so much. Jamie Hince is a killer guitar player, just like Jimmy Shaw from Metric. They both have this intense energy that you can’t take your eyes off. They also make it look so simple. But, when you watch someone do something that they love, of course it looks easy.

Was there any point to this? Probably not, but there’d be no fun it if there was! I now have cramp in my legs from sitting down writing this. Guess I won’t be riding my bike this evening!
