A Good Pop Song.

I won’t lie I HATE X-Factor. Totally hate it. It encourages talentless folks to be even more talentless. And I was never one for understanding the appeal of Diana Vickers. Her voice irritated me a lot.

Then. She released Once and I was shocked. Her voice wasn’t as annoying as it was on X-Factor.

THEN.

THEN.

She releases this :  The Boy Who Murdered Love. (I’m going to swear dear reader) IT’S AN AMAZING SONG, IT’S A FUCKING BRILLIANT POP SONG AND I CANNOT STOP PLAYING IT. I’m not ashamed at all. Not one bit. I bloody love it. I’d probably dance and sing along to it if I heard it when out. I do a really good impression of Diana Vickers. Can I make a career out of it? Maybe I could…who knows.

Anyway. I bloody love this song. To hell with all the music snobbery. I’m not down with that. I can listen to Cold Cave and then Diana Vickers if I want and not feel the need to repent by sitting in my room listening to Bob Dylan. I like what I like and don’t ever need to justify it. More people should be like this towards music.

Mystery Jets.

Mystery Jets are my happy band. Regardless of if I feel like shit, I listen to them and I immediately feel happy. Some of the songs are heartbreaking (Flakes) but the beauty in the song is enough to make me feel something no other band has and maybe never will.

Their debut album was a brilliant first album, and they beat the curse that comes with the second album. Twenty One is a masterpiece. There’s no denying it. Anybody who says differently will not win. Flakes, Hand Me Down, Hideaway…the whole album is just beautiful. I’m not even going to deny how excited I am for the new ablum, Serotonin. I’ve only heard about 3 or 4 tracks from it but going by what I have heard I believe it will probably be one of the best albums of the year. Who cares if the bastarding Mercury Music Prize doesn’t acknowledge it. It’s all about the fans reaction and I believe it will be just as mind blowing as Twenty One. Mystery Jets are a band that you can put all your faith and trust in and you know it will be safe. If they ever split up I will be devestated. I’ll be inconsolable. I’ll weep like a child whilst listening to Behind The Bunhouse. I’m not even ashamed.

Leah Mason.

She deserves a post due to being bloody amazing.

Last Tuesday she supported Ellie Goulding in Manchester. I won’t lie, it was beautiful. She’s beautiful. Girls with guitars usually are (yes there are a lot of exceptions, I won’t say any names) But Leah Mason is just stunning. Everything about her is just..go see her live, you’ll know what I mean. She kills the guitar, she plays the shit out of it. The venue holds about I reckon…500? Maybe more/less. Either way she controlled that crowd as if she was headlining. That’s when you know you are watching something special.

I cannot find anyone to compare Leah Mason to. You know why? Because she’s different. She really is. I know it’s been said before about others, but it’s true. Just because she plays the guitar doesn’t mean she’s like Ellie Goulding or just because she has a stunning voice doesn’t mean she’s like Cat Power. She’s just as amazing, but she’s not like them. And that’s why I hope she becomes well known. She’s different but no doubt the press will find someone for her to be compared to without giving her a listen.

Her MySpace page only has 2 tracks on at the moment, and it does leave you wanting to hear more. You find yourself playing them over and over again(I’m probably part responsible for the amount of plays they get…not even sorry!) and YouTube has next to nothing of hers on there. Which is why listening to her music is so special. There’s not much of her stuff out there, which is why you treasure it more.

Lissie (Part 2).

I’m going to write this properly and try not to be too biased, although we know I will be. Because if I disliked Lissie, would I really write about her? Exactly.

Every so often, a singer comes along and just leaves you mind blown. Their voice shatters your heart into pieces and you just cannot believe what you are hearing. I had this feeling when I first heard Cat Power, Florence + The Machine and Ellie Goulding. I also had it the first time my mum played me Morrissey and Bob Dylan. The feeling has come back, this time it’s all down to Lissie. I won’t lie, I do have a weakness for female singers with guitars. I just think it’s beautiful, so long as they are good, obviously.

Lissie’s had the Stevie Nicks comparison, although I see it- I don’t go for it. I honestly think she’s as amazing as Cat Power. There’s just something about those two that in 50 years time- people will still know who they are. They’ll remember Lissie and be like “Remember when she covered Metalica and Lady GaGa?!” She kills the guitar, her voice is husky- yet you know it isn’t forced at all. She’s played a few times with Ellie Goulding. I reckon if I actually saw this I’d have some kind of breakdown. It’d be like Bob Dylan and Cat Power singing together. I must stop thinking about this because it’ll only set me off again!

You can put Lissie in any kind of genre you want, dismiss her because she’s another woman with a guitar- but you’ll be a total fool to do so. Besides, if anyone can turn a legendary metal song into something painfully beautiful like Lissie has- then you know they’ll be around for a long time. And you know what? It’s better than the original. I’ve got no problems saying that.

Her album is out SOON, and it better do well or I will just have some kind of hissy fit. I really will. So do me a favour and buy her album because I don’t want to throw a strop at all.

Making Pies (Duet With Ellie Goulding).

Actually Lissie, you ever see this (or Ellie) could you both please do an album together? It’d probably be the best thing ever and it’d make a hell of a lot of people happy. Aoh, and do a tour together? I’m not really asking for much 😉

Ellie Goulding And Leah Mason. Manchester Academy 2. 8th June 2010.

I’m just going to throw it out there, Leah Mason is bloody brilliant. I say this about most female singers with a guitar, but she really is brilliant. Her voice and stage presence were of someone who had been doing it for years. I know next to nothing about Leah Mason. I’d only heard a couple of songs before seeing her tonight, and her half hour set left me wanting to hear a lot more. She’s stunning and plays the guitar amazingly.

Just after 9pm the venue lights are dimmed, the crowd start screaming a bit and the intro to Lights commences. Ellie and her band take to the stage, and cause a riot with Lights. Most fans are gutted that it didn’t make the album, but hearing it live makes up for it, easily. The whole album is played alongside a cover of Midlake’s Roscoe, which, not being biased or anything, is one of my favourite covers- I’m not really into covers but Ellie takes this and makes it her own. A few songs into the set, she says it is “bloody brilliant” to be back home. My personal highlight was Salt Skin, it always is. It’s the drumming. The intensity on Ellie’s face as she beats the shit out of the drum is fascinating. Wish I Stayed is played acoustically, one of the first demos she wrote, in her dressing gown at university, she tells us. Proving that not all students go out and get wasted every night.

Its struggle to express just how beautiful tonight’s gig was, you just have to see it for yourself. Her band- Joe (drums), Chris (bass, keys, and guitar) and Max (synth/keys) are excellent musicians who sing along to every word like us in the crowd. Of course it’s Guns And Horses and Starry Eyed that are sung the loudest by the crowd. However at least half of us destroy our lungs and vocal chords singing to Every Time You Go and Your Biggest Mistake. The Writer is heartbreakingly beautiful probably because it’s easy to relate to.

Ellie recently supported John Mayer, including two nights at Wembley. Regardless of the size of venue, whether it’s Wembley or the Academy 2 in Manchester- Ellie Goulding leaves the crowd in awe. There is no denying just how wonderful and talented she is, and I’m not just saying this because I’ve loved her music for over a year now.  I nearly didn’t make it to the gig as it was sold out, but two mates had spare tickets thankfully!

She leaves the stage graciously bowing and blowing kisses, November seems so far away.

The only downside was breaking down on the motorway going home. Could be worse though, could’ve happened on the way there!

Lissie.

Realised it’s been a long time since I wrote anything…I honestly don’t know why I haven’t. I just got lazy? I’m not lazy. I don’t know.

ANYWAY.

THIS right HERE is stunning. I’m not gonna tell you what it is. You’ve probably seen it already if you’re an Ellie Goulding and/or Lissie fan.  It’s just stunning. I watched it with my  mouth open and covered in goose bumps. It’s just haunting and gorgeous. Their voices are so perfect together. I think anyone who was in the room when this was performed is truly a lucky bugger.
