Ellie Goulding. Manchester Academy 3. Tuesday 30th March 2010.

Before I tell you about the gig, I have a story to tell you. As you know, Ellie likes to run. So during this tour she has had a handful of fans join her on a jog a few hours before her gigs. I, Miss Unfit 2010 decided to enter the competition. My best friend and I were part ofher run in Manchester. I had to give up quite early on because I had a cold which has turned into something else. I’m not registered with a doctor so I’m suffering! Although, I have the loveliest cough medicine EVER! Anyway, after the run Ellie signed things and took photos. She is my height. I’m not very tall. This made me love her even more than I already do! She told me I have her favourite name in the world. I tell people that now haha. I’m never changing my name! Not that I wanted to, but y’know. Enough about me meeting Ellie…have a wee review about the gig instead!

Opening with Lights, I knew that this gig was going to be so much more than I and the few hundred people crammed into the Academy. Before the gig, I had Lights (song) constantly on repeat. There is something about it that is just mesmirising. It is a stunning song that after one listen, you will play it over and over. It’s a song that grabs you within seconds. Every track off the album is played and a electro version of Midlake’s Roscoe is played too. I’m not a big fan of covers, but I adore Ellie’s version of Roscoe. Every song is sang back to Ellie, of course it was Starry Eyed that sent the crowd crazy!  However for me, it was all about Salt Skin. Everything about that song is just stunning. The lyrics, the music, the production, the voice. Salt Skin live caused me to have a mini heart attack. Ellie’s drum solo near the end was mind blowing. I’m not just saying this because I love her, but because she has a rare talent. The way she performs is so passionate and you feel every word she is singing. Salt Skin was the highlight of the night for me, but tracks like Under The Sheets and Guns And Horses (next single) was brilliant. I won’t lie, I was quite emotional during the gig, The Writer and Every Time You Go set me off. If I knew why, I probably would’ve stopped myself hah! There is no denying that Ellie Goulding is a beautiful talented person, so I suggest you find a way of seeing her live so you can experience this. It’s the drumming that killed me a bit inside. I looked around at the crowd every time she did a drum solo and everybody was in awe of what was in front of them. Wish I Stayed was played acoustically which to be honest, no words can do it justice. If I’m honest, what I have written doesn’t do Ellie’s gig any justice, it left me speechless but wanting to desperately see her again live.

This video from the gig is amazing : Salt Skin.

Oh and Ellie, if you do see this at all, the offer of buying you a cup of tea is there still 🙂

Ellie Goulding-Lights.

The album opens with a different version of Guns And Horses. When I first heard it, I didn’t like it. But, I played it a few more times and adored it. I’ve heard the demos of most of the tracks on the album, but hearing the Lights version of them all may upset some people that want Ellie to just sing with a guitar and have no electro sounds on the album. But before you judge it, give it a listen. Sit down with some headphones on and you will hear one of the most beautifullest albums ever.

I know I said all this about Florence but Lights is as amazing as Lungs. It really is. I’m not just saying it because I love Ellie but there is no fault at all on this album. No album fillers. Just good, honest music. Her lyrics are gorgeous and you can feel that she feels every word. We need more honest singers and luckily there are some decent ones around.

I know that this is a poor excuse for a review haha but, I just want to make it clear that this album, is stunning. I don’t want to write a review like you’d read in a magazine. I’m writing it as a fan that has been a fan of Ellie’s since the start of last year and has waited forever for this album. If the album is number 1 on Sunday I’m going to get drunk.Okay I don’t need a reason but y’know!

Hopefully This Love will be the next single. There’s something about it that has “NUMBER 1” written all over it.

I could honestly ramble on about the excellence of this album, but if you have it-you’ll already know this. If you don’t have it, most record shops are open until half 5 so off you go and buy it!
